A Newborn Behind Bars: What Is the Fault of a One-Month-Old Baby?

Inside a jail in Jhansi, there is a prisoner who has committed no crime.
She is just a one-month-old innocent baby.

She doesn’t understand the world,
She doesn’t know the meaning of relationships…
Yet, she is living behind bars.

The question is — what is her fault?

This heartbreaking case has emerged from Sarandra Nagar in the Prem Nagar police station area of Jhansi.

Monika, a 24-year-old woman originally from Konch in Jalaun, was married to Sandeep Savita on June 9, 2025. A significant amount of money and gifts were given during the marriage, but allegations suggest that dowry demands from the in-laws never stopped.

About a month ago, Monika gave birth to a baby girl, bringing joy to the family. However, that happiness did not last long.

On the day of the incident, Monika went to take a bath but did not come out for a long time. When the family grew suspicious and broke open the door, she was found hanging with a dupatta. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

The woman’s family has alleged that this was not a suicide but a case of dowry death. According to her brother, Monika was continuously harassed after marriage. There were demands for a Bullet motorcycle, a gold chain, and other valuables. Physical abuse and mental pressure were also reported.

The police registered an FIR and arrested her husband, Sandeep Savita, and mother-in-law, Gayatri Devi, on April 5, and sent them to jail.

But the most painful part of this story begins here.

There was no one to take care of the one-month-old baby. As a result, the authorities decided to keep her in jail along with her father and grandmother.

According to jail rules, children below the age of six can stay with their parents in prison. Arrangements have been made for the baby’s milk, clothes, and diapers.

But the question remains — is this enough for a child?

At an age when a baby needs a mother’s love, care, and protection, she is growing up within prison walls.

This is not just a family tragedy, but a serious question on the system and society.

What is the fault of this innocent child?
Or is she simply a victim of circumstances?
